A look back at the highlights of May and a brief outlook for the coming weeks. This time with Hammer Days; Flying into the TRA; Hike and Fly Events; Brauneck Paragliding – Trying to go big 298 km FAI; Understanding thermals: How bubble theory helps you make better decisions and Red Bull X-Alps 2025 Team Training German 1 Markus Anders.
Hammer days
April ended and May began with a great day. On these two days, four flights over 300 km and 82 flights over 200 km were uploaded to the DHV-XC server. This is unique in the history of paragliding and will probably not be repeated so quickly, or perhaps it will? Due to the dry, but unfortunately very windy weather, many more 200 and 300 km flights were flown, mostly one-way and in the flatlands. We will see what the session will bring.
Entry into the TRA
Austro Control points out the special features that must be observed when entering the TRA (Temporary Reserved Airspace) (in German). In particular, it should be noted that entry is only permitted if the TRA is activated. The website does not mention that ATIS can now also be accessed via the Austro Control home briefing page (after logging in to the Services – ATIS menu).
Hike and Fly Event
The FAI offers an overview of all hike and fly events taking place throughout the year. Maybe there’s something for you too? The Engelberg Cup is taking place today, an interview with its organiser Peter Waldner can be read here.
Brauneck Paragliding – Trying to go big 298 km FAI
A small group of cross-country flying cracks try to crack the 300 km XC distance from Brauneck. Philipp Reiser narrowly failed on 30 April, but his video of the flight is well worth watching. He also gives lots of tips and tricks for flying around the Brauneck for pilots who don’t think so big.
Understanding thermals: How bubble theory helps you make better decisions
In this video, Georg explains his thermal theory very clearly (in german). The basis for this is a lava lamp. Many an effect that each of us has experienced in the air can be explained in an understandable way. I was unable to understand his bubble theory in practice.
Red Bull X-Alps 2025 | Team Training German 1 | Markus Anders
The Red Bull X-Alps start on 15 June in Kitzbühel. Of course, this means intensive preparation for the pilots. Markus Anders is one of those who shares his preparations with us. The following video is about the simulation of a competition day.
